The Dresden Staatskapelle, Saxon State Orchestra, Dresden, or, to give it its full name, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, is one of the oldest orchestras in the world, having been founded by Elector Moritz of Saxony in 1548. As a former court orchestra, it is no surprise that the Staatskapelle has a rich and long history full of collaborations with famous names: composers Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner as well as conductors like Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Busch and Giuseppe Sinopoli have all been affiliated with the orchestra.
Since 2007, the orchestra has had a composer in residence. The current incumbent is English composer Rebecca Saunders. The Staatskapelle has featured on recordings of its performances as far back as the 1920s. Under the auspices of chief conductor, Fabio Luisi, the current season showcases chamber music, piano recitals and symphony music from a variety of composers, as well as more contemporary offerings such as jazz concerts.
