This Sunday, Gianandrea Noseda will conduct the BBC Philharmonic and the Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre in a choral portrait of Rachmaninov that takes in familiar favourites as well as neglected masterpieces.  Much of Rachmaninov's best music has been slow to enter the repertoire. His evocative choral symphony The Bells is based on an adaptation by the Russian Symbolist poet Konstantin Balmont of verses by Edgar Allan Poe.

Gianandrea Noseda is no stranger to the Russian repertoire: His Turin production of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece Boris Godunov has recently been released on Opus Arte DVD and Blu-ray. Misha Didyk, Sunday night’s tenor, stars as Hermann in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame from the Liceu also available from Opus Arte. Rachmaninov’ own opera The Miserly Knight from Glyndebourne as well as other operas by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich have also been released on Opus Arte and will be of interest to any lover of Russian music.
