Carlos Acosta (Divertissements); Leanne Benjamin (Divertissements); Darcey Bussell (Divertissements); Thiago Soares (Divertissements); Steven McRae (Les Patineurs); Samantha Raine (Les Patineurs); Miyako Yoshida (Scènes de Ballet); Ivan Putrov (Scènes de Ballet)

Founder choreographer of The Royal Ballet, Frederick Ashton created more than 100 ballets over a 60 year career. Showcasing three of his shorter works, this disc reflects the breadth of his sophisticated, elegant and widely popular style.

Les Patineurs evokes the Edwardian skating rink, with all its youthful charm and humour, in contrast to Scènes de Ballet where sharp geometric shapes and the music of Igor Stravinsky are combined to create perhaps Ashton’s most modernist work. Divertissements, a collection of eight short dances, features some of Ashton’s most lyrical choreography, including pas de deux set to Romantic masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Massenet.

"Royal Ballet stars embody choreographer Frederick Ashton's range: quirkiest in dancer Tamara Rojo's homage to Isodora Duncan, and most charming in Les Patineurs" (BBC Music Magazine ★★★★)

"… this retrospective of Ashton’s work is one of the finest ballet DVDs I’ve ever seen." (Fanfare)

"[Les Patinuers] is a ballet to see over and over again to appreciate not only its invention, good humour and variety but also the virtuosity of the dancers involved, not least Steven McRae in the part of the Blue Boy who ends the ballet with a seemingly endless series of pirouettes as the curtain comes down." (Musicweb International)

"Ashton’s ingenuity shines through every sequence [in Scènes de Ballet], as it does from every moment of this captivating collection." (Dance Magazine)
