"Yet there is also much to like in this production, which has allowed Antonio Pappano to see an opera he has long championed brought to the stage. The slowly rotating uprooted tree which dominates Paolo Fantin’s symbolic designs permits – with Alessandro Carletti’s resourceful lighting - some remarkable coups de theatre: transplanting Rossini’s Swiss melodrama to Bosnia works very plausibly.

[an] evening of extraordinarily fine music-making ..." (The Independent)

"…. at its best, the production is very powerful. The grouping and strong vocal contributions of the chorus, together with Alessandro Carletti’s symbolic lighting, make for high-tension curtains to each act. The final tableau, in which the Swiss people hail the beauty of nature and the joy of liberty, is tremendously stirring. Antonio Pappano’s conducting is both assured and inspiring. A long and challenging evening, but a rewarding one." (The Evening Standard)

"There were some good stage effects, as in the exploding apple that Tell “shoots” off his son’s head. This complex, marathon opera about liberty, performed with such gusto, gives us hope. In some respects at least, like William Tell himself, the Royal Opera’s production hit the mark" (The Observer)

"Finley makes a great Tell, noble, eloquent, at once angry yet tender as his political awareness grows. Byström is admirably intense, and there’s fantastic singing from John Osborn in the immensely difficult tenor role of Arnold. Antonio Pappano, long a champion of the work, conducts with tremendous passion." (The Guardian)
