Roberto Bolle (Aminta (Sylvia); Quasimodo (Notre Dame)); Darcey Bussell (Sylvia (Sylvia)); Natalia Osipova (Esmeralda (Notre Dame))

This box set combines three magnificent performances by one of the most gift dancers of his generation - Roberto Bolle. The Italian star is partnered with Darcey Busell in Frederick Ashton’s Sylvia, restored to the splendour of its elegant and opulent three-act form for the 75th anniversary celebrations of The Royal Ballet.
Notre-Dame de Paris, inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, with music by Maurice Jarre, sets by René Allio and the renowned costumes of Yves Saint-Laurent, unites Roberto Bolle with Russian super-star Natalia Osispova as Quasimodo and Esmeralda. The performance by La Scala's ballet celebrates choreographer Roland Petit and the triumph of his vision.
A very special dance occasion in honour of a celestial alignment of events, the Gala des Étoiles celebrates the Ballet Corp’s time-honoured tradition of a Grand Gala at which La Scala’s étoiles – Svetlana Zakharova, Roberto Bolle and Massimo Murru – extend Milan’s red carpet to a veritable constellation of guest dancers from around the world, including rising stars and luminaries of the ballet universe.

This set of three films provides an outstanding showcase for the artistry of dancer Roberto Bolle, a ballet star of our own time. For the 75th anniversary celebrations of The Royal Ballet, Frederick Ashton’s Sylvia was restored to the splendour of its elegant and opulent three-act form. Casting Bolle as Aminta alongside Darcey Bussell in the title role, this is a wonderful showcase for virtuosity, invention and classical beauty. By contrast Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris exudes modernity, with its cool choreography and chic costumes by Yves Saint-Laurent. Here Bolle’s tragic Quasimodo, by turns fierce and tender, dances opposite Natalia Osipova as Esmeralda. In a second production from La Scala, the Ballet Corp’s traditional Grand Gala aligns with Milan’s tenure as host city of EXPO 2015, and Roberto Bolle, as one of La Scala’s étoiles, plays a central role in the stunning programme of excerpts. He performs the pas de deux from yet another Petit masterwork, dancing Don José to Polina Semionova’s Carmen, along with the mesmerizing contemporary solo Prototype.

"[Darcey Bussell] dances with perfect precision in the pizzicato divertissement and is ravishingly radiant in the pas de deux powerfully partnered by Roberto Bolle who also displays some soaring elevation as the shepherd Aminta. Mara Galeazzi has developed into an accomplished performer and shines as Diana with Martin Harvey providing a superb and mischievous Eros. It is gorgeous - do not miss it." (The Stage - Sylvia)

"Osipova is every bit the thespian as the ballerina; her terror as she heads to the gallows in Act II is palpable and her disgust at Frollo's lunging affections convincing. As for Bolle, it's got to be hard enough to dance most of a two-hour ballet with one shoulder hunched up to your ear, much less to elicit compassion for a character who is (in this telling) underdeveloped. Yet he manages to instill Quasimodo with a tragic air that is both fierce and tender." (artsheraldtribune.com - Notre Dame de Paris)

"Technically the dancing was brilliant, at times jaw-droppingly so, featuring very demanding leaps, turns, and some exhilarating lifts in the pas de deux. The female dancers were presented beautifully.

This was a dazzling night of dance, a grand ‘Gala of stars’ indeed." (Sydney Arts Guide - Gala des etoiles)
